more than a feeling

I don’t have a TON to show today because even though I worked nonstop every night last week, it was all finishings on the jacket/redoing the sleeves/getting all the closures put on and taken off because they’re not right and put back on and oops it needs to be a half inch lower, etc.

That being said my vinyl for my boot covers/gloves came in on Wednesday so that afternoon I very quickly got my boot covers made.

Used my Ms Marvel boot covers as a pattern.

I really need to get a light over on my mirror side of the room.
I think I may have to wear my Silk Spectre garter belt to keep them up but overall pretty happy with them.
The vinyl is slightly more desaturated than it looked online and just looks grey next to the blue of my coat. Did a test run of paint +modpodge on a scrap and it worked ok. I may do that to brighten it up.

Also, I really need to practice walking in these. My ankles were screaming just for the few seconds I walked down the hall in them. It’s been a minute since I wore heels this high.

I got 2 new children for my sewing room!

I GOT A NEW IRON!

I haven’t used it yet. I want to read the manual first and haven’t had time. Isn’t it pretty?
My old iron is starting to leak so it was time. It’s going to be “retired” to the laundry room… since I have a built-in ironing board down there and haven’t even gotten to use it because the only iron in my house has always lived in my sewing room! LOL So old iron will now be laundry room iron.

The best part of new iron is it has NO AUTO SHUT-OFF which was my least favourite thing about old iron… it would auto-shut off in like 5 minutes of no use, but you couldn’t just… turn it back on. You had to unplug it, wait 5 seconds, plug it back in and wait on it to heat back up. It was a pain in the butt with sewing.

The other baby!

Silhouette cameo 3. I haven’t even gotten her out of the box yet. At the moment I have no projects that need anything cut like this, so I probably won’t really get to play with until the dragoncon rush passes.

I did finally take a pic of the tricorder Chase 3d printed for me a couple of weeks ago…

And he also printed this for me.

He’s also printed me a lightsaber hilt to carry with jedi Leia at dcon since I don’t want to take my MR saber. We’re just doing Luke’s ANH/ESB lightsaber, so Kevin can also use it.

Luna has recently decided she enjoys my sewing room again. She hasn’t come up there at all recently but all weekend she was up there.

Yesterday she was curled up behind these boxes.
I think having the roomba going this weekend made her want to be upstairs more LOL

Anyway, Hera jacket.
I ended up removing the “fluff” from the lining. The lining was a repeat of the taffeta shape layer but having the pleating also in the lining was just too much. So I took it out and it helped.

It doesn’t fit my dressform great! Looks better on me. I hope.

I had made one sleeve already but decided to remake it – I’d made the dumb mistake of thinking I was going to line it like the jacket… duh, I can’t, then I’d have this bright blue lining showing in the sleeves. AND I wasn’t happy with how the pleating was matching up on the top so I was like, let’s just remake them. And that was a full day and a half project. Sadly I didn’t like the new sleeves as much as the old – the shape ended up being slightly different somehow. Bummer. But I didn’t realize this til they were all done and the pleating hand-sewn in place and I wasn’t about to do them again.

Without the belt.
The sleeves also ended up being too long. I was loath to take them off the jacket and have to shorten them internally again, so instead I just rolled them up and hand-stitched it into place. Blah. Overall this jacket is nowhere near my best work but it’ll do.

The collar I ended up NOT attaching to the full collar of the jacket like I’d originally planned. I just tacked into place at the back and then just pull it over my head. It’s a layer of taffeta with a wider layer of the blue fabric over it.

Removable belt is the vinyl of course. Still need to put a hook and eye in the back.

Closures… there’s a quasi-waist-stay that attaches at the side seams and closes in the front with a swimsuit hook, it keeps the sides close to my body. Then there’s a snap at the left shoulder inside, a snap at the left waist, then the front panel crosses over and snaps in two places at the right shoulder and right waist.
Like I said at the top of the post, this was a lot of adjustment and experimentation. Originally the waist-stay was all the way around and tacked at the back seam but it didn’t work right. And originally I had the jacket closing on the interior with ties but that was too fiddly.
I do need to redo the interior waist snap, I put it on wrong so it’s twisting and causing a lump in order to reach the other side of the snap (I put it on the front instead of the back.) I may also add one more snap to the front closure.

Last night I started the gloves. Got the upper part made and struggled with making gloves the rest of the night. I was using Yaya’s new-ish glove/boot cover pattern and I ended up with 3 gloves and all of them were too tight. I was even using the L/XL pattern size because I did not want them to be too fitted (so I could take them off and on really quickly), and I have really small hands… but they were all too tight on the lower part of my middle and ring fingers. Like uncomfortably tight. So I dunno what my problem is with gloves. I may try again but I don’t want to spend too much time on it, I ordered a pair of short spandex navy blue gloves on amazon as back up.

OH! I nearly forgot my makeup test.

My makeup came Saturday so I WAS just going to do a spot on my forehead to see how it worked with the wig, because I was worried the wig was going to be too dark. But I got carried away and did my whole face. (no other makeup except the vestiges of that day’s eyeliner)
I had 2 shades of yellow and you can see the darker yellow at my forehead – I likely wont use much of that unless I take time to blend it more. I ordered an eyeshadow pallet that’s got some more dark yellows/oranges/tans in it I can use on my eyelids and also my lips if I get desperate. I still need to buy some yellow lipstick.
BUT I’m really glad the wig tone works ok with the makeup and I don’t have to buy another wig.

So, to-do on Hera:
Make circlet & earrings (got some beads this weekend)
Fix one snap on jacket/add on snap on front
Hook and eye on belt
Finish upper gloves
figure out hand part of gloves
Bead jacket (on schedule for saturday when I’ll be kicked out of my house with the cat while filming is happening)
Paint vinyl pieces

I was really hoping to call this like 90% done this weekend, and I’m CLOSE… (I had a migraine all weekend that slowed me down a bit but I kept the pedal to the metal as much as possible). SEWING is like 90% done. Now it’s just crafting and beading.

I’ve got to put my attention back on the lake dress this week a bit – I’m hoping to get the outer dress panels cut this week so I can determine if I need to order more fabric or not so I can get that ordered if so. I think it’s going to be cutting it close. I have 8 yds of chiffon, I’m thinking I may need to get like maybe 2 more. I just need to check and see.

So since I did one to-do list let me go ahead and do the rest of my to-do list:

Crusher:
Style wig
finish tricorder
put magnet on back of communicator
put shoulder pads in
put elastic on pant legs

Crait Leia:
Finish sewing on other sleeve
hem
finish restyling wig

Padme Lake Gown:
Style wig
make headbands
cast new necklace/paint
paint armbands
Cut outer dress panels
Finish underdress
Attach binding on outerdress
attach both pieces
dye
alter shoes
make beaded pieces

OBv you can see where the bulk of my work is left. I’m glad I dropped Belle. I would have been super stressed otherwise.

I’ll leave you with some surprise lilies that popped up in our backyard. Chase was weed-eating the whole area they were in so I went ahead and cut them and put them in a vase on our porch. Can’t have them inside because cat. But they are so pretty!
